Here you see the rare skeleton of the Aepyornis, a giant Elephant Bird from Madagascar that became extinct approximately 1,000 years ago. The bird laid the largest eggs in world history, and was the inspiration for the legend of the Roc, a mythical giant bird from the Arabian tales of One Thousand and One Nights. The bird was later also described by Marco Polo. As a dramatically large and extremely rare creature, the Aepyornis represents the crossroads between science, antiquity, and myth.
The skull of a gigantic Mosasaurus, a 70-million-year-old extinct aquatic predator that had no natural enemies. Fossil remains of the creature were discovered fort he first time near Maastricht in the 18th century, after which the animal was named after the river Meuse (Mosa). The artists transformed the skull into a 2.5-metre-high sculpture that appears to swim toward its prey at the water's surface. The forged, painted metal coral branches refer to the natural habitat of the predator.
A Triceratops skull rotates slowly above an antique wooden pedestal, as if the enormously heavy object weighs nothing at all. The 18th-century ceiling painting above it, created by Dutch master Jacob de Wit, looks almost like modern art compared to the 67-million-year-old skull. The delicate piece of white coral forms a quiet contrast between fragility and mass, slow growth and decay.
